Hires & Fires: VTB boosts equity trading/ HSBC Private Banking hires Goldman’s Gurbatov

Russian investment banks VTB Capital has boosted it equity trading desk with the recruitment of Vlad Markovskiy and Denis Gorvat.

A VTB source said Markovskiy was joining from Swiss bank UBS while Gorvat had been tapped from Dutch bank ING.

VTB, a state-controlled entity which launched just over a year ago, wants to build on its success in debt capital market by building out an equity brokerage.  The bank has risen to number two in the league table of arrangers of Eurobonds in the Russia and CIS debt capital market for the first six months of 2009, according to data provider CBonds.

Separately, HSBC Private Banking has boosted its Eastern Europe team with the hire of Nikolai Gurbatov as an associate director from Goldman Sachs.

HSBC has made some recent big hires, including two senior bankers for its global South Asian team from UBS.

The group has also recently launched both retail and private banking operations in Russia.
