Lamudi says Pakistan emerging markets leader for eco-friendly homes

Pakistan leads the emerging markets for eco-friendly and energy-efficient homes, while Bangladesh is the emerging market country with the most environmentally-friendly commercial property, a study by global real estate portal Lamudi shows.

The research, based on data for more than 30 countries in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America, covers three types of real estate: apartments, houses, and commercial property. Pakistan tops the apartments and houses rankings and is second on the commercial property list.

In the apartments category, the Pakistani city of Karachi ranks first, while Dhaka and Amman, the capital cities of Bangladesh and Jordan, are second and third respectively, according to a statement from the Berlin-headquartered online real estate market place.

The three cities have the highest number of properties for sale or rent offering green features, including high energy efficiency ratings, solar panels, water tanks and greywater systems, Lamudi said.

In the houses segment, the top rung belongs to Lahore, capital of the Pakistani province of Punjab, with Karachi ranking second and Yangon, the largest city in Myanmar, third.

In the commercial property ranking, Chittagong, the main port of Bangladesh and an important South Asian business hub, holds the top position. Karachi is in second and Lahore in third place.

Pakistan has topped Lamudi’s eco-friendly real estate rankings for the second year in a row.

In total, 49.5% of properties listed on the Lamudi Pakistan website have eco-friendly features today, compared with 17% last year, the statement said.

“The tide is now turning for green building in the emerging markets. We believe that the demand for environmentally-friendly real estate is not just a western trend – it is a global phenomenon,” the statement quoted Paul Philipp Hermann, one of Lamudi’s founders and managing directors, as saying.

“House-hunters in regions such as South Asia are now on the lookout for all the latest property features, including eco-friendly options. It is not surprising, then, that we are seeing increasing demand on our platform for both homes and office space with sustainable, eco-friendly features.”
