NGO says has launched new cryptocurrency, afro, to boost growth in Africa

By Andrei Skvarsky.

A Geneva-based nongovernmental organisation has announced it has launched a cryptocurrency, called the afro, that is purportedly designed to promote economic growth and financial inclusion in Africa.

The afro is “the first cryptocurrency designed for Africa and dedicated to Africa’s economic growth and societal development”, the NGO, Afro Foundation, said in a statement.

In a description on its website, the foundation says the afro is available to anyone to use worldwide.

The afro, which is currently worth about $0.003, is designed to “notably lower transfer and transaction costs, facilitate trade exchange between African countries and regions, and contribute to the financial inclusion of individuals and African SMEs [small and medium-sized enterprises]”, the NGO said in its statement.
