Hires/Fires: Nomura boosts Russian research effort/ VTB Capital carry on hiring

Japanese investment bank Nomura has boosted its Russian research effort with the appointment of Ivan Tchakarov as an economist and Vladimir Zhukov as an equity analyst.

Tchakarov, a Russian economist, is to be based in London while Zhukov will cover steel and raw materials from Nomura’s Moscow base. Zhukov had previously worked at Lehman Brothers for a year as an executive director and at Alfa Bank in Moscow as an equity analyst for two years.

As part of the firm’s international growth strategy, Nomura said it is building its talent pool in investment banking which should translate into further hires in the region.

It was recently revealed that Nick Jordan, former head of Lehman Brothers, had been overlooked for the role as head of the combined Nomura and Lehman platform in Moscow. That role instead went to Maxim Selzter, who was originally appointed general director of Nomura when the bank opened its Moscow office in March 2007.

Separately, Russian investment bank VTB Capital seems to be renewing its hiring campaign following the recruitment of Andrey Yumatov from Deutsche Bank as head of fixed income sales and deputy head of fixed income .

The VTB group had introduced a hiring freeze across its businesses in late last year in response to the banking crisis.

Yumatov joins the swelling Deutsche Bank alumni at VTB  Capital, which is said to represent almost 100 of its 500 bankers.

Another recent recruit on equity sales was Michael Capone, who joined from Goldman Sachs after a number of years at Deutsche Bank in Moscow
