Russia Finance Minister Kudrin 'quits' after 11 years

By Marcus Williams.

Russia’s Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin, the cool-headed darling of the country’s purse-strings, has resigned after clashing with President Dmitry Medvedev.

Kudrin, who ran finance since 2000, quit the government after saying he would not work under Medvedev in next year’s cabinet due to serious disagreements over spending in defense.

Kudrin had indicated his desire to be premier but it looks like his old pal Vladimir Putin preferred Medvedev.

The influential “Euromoney” magazine  named Kudrin the best Finance Minister in 2010.

“Euromoney” said it thinks highly of Kudrin’s effort to preserve the Russian super budget revenues, generated by high oil prices, as well as his effort to set up the stabilization fund that Russia capitalized on during the global financial crisis a lot more effectively that many experts had expected.
