Russian deputy economics minister fired for slamming pension money moratorium

By Andrei Skvarsky.

Russian Deputy Economic Development Minister Sergei Belyakov was fired on August 6 after publicly condemning the government’s one-year extension of a moratorium on the investment of assets from non-state pension funds.

In explaining the dismissal order by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, the government cited a law prohibiting government officials from publicly expressing their personal views on actions by their superiors.

The government needs the pension fund money to finance development projects in Crimea.

Belyakov, 41, who has qualifications in law from the academy of the Federal Security Service (FSB), had said on Facebook he was “ashamed” of the moratorium extension, and that he was expressing his “personal opinion”.
