Switzerland is Europe’s most cryptocurrency- and blockchain-friendly country, according to a study carried out in the framework of BlockShow Europe 2018, a planned flagship conference on blockchain technology in Berlin on May 28-29.
Regulations on initial coin offerings (ICOs) and on cryptocurrencies as a means of payment, and taxation of cryptocurrency trading and digital money-based operations were the criteria in the study, which looked at 48 European countries.
The BlockShow company, organiser of BlockShow Europe conferences, published a list of the ten of the 48 nations that were believed to provide the most favourable cryptocurrency and blockchain environments.
Gibraltar is number two and Malta number three on the list. Britain comes fourth.
Belarus ranks 10th, but it exempts cryptocurrencies from tax until 2023.
The 10-nation list does not include Russia, whose parliament is reportedly getting down to debating a bill on cryptocurrencies on May 22.
BlockShow has not published data on the other 38 countries.
Switzerland owes its top crypto status to its town of Zug, which is a hub for cryptocurrency activities and has been dubbed Crypto Valley.
In February, British newspaper Daily Express quoted Swiss economics minister Johann Schneider-Ammann, a former Swiss president, as expressing hope that “in five or ten years nobody will speak about the Crypto Valley Zug, but about the Crypto Nation Switzerland”.
BlockShow Europe 2018 is expected to bring together more than 3,000 people and to hear over 80 speakers from technology and other companies, commercial and central banks, and governments. More than 150 projects would be presented during the forum.
