Five young entrepreneurs have been selected for a six-month seed accelerator programme in Senegal due to pioneering farming practices proposed by them.
Each of the five innovators, all of whom are Senegalese, will receive $2,000 to kick-start their business and may receive additional funding after the completion of the Senegal Start-Up Accelerator programme, according to a statement from social entrepreneurship promotion nonprofit Reach for Change.
The five men’s innovations include projects to build an electronic irrigation system, to set up a platform to connect farmers to experts, service providers and materials suppliers, and to boost the production of plant-based medicines, and a recycling project to involve job creation in addition to being an environmental measure.
The Senegal Start-Up Accelerator, whose target sectors are agriculture and fishing, has been set up by Reach for Change, which is based in Ghana and is active in about 20 countries in Africa, Europe and Asia, and Kosmos Energy, a Texas-headquartered oil and gas company.
