The real-time online geological monitoring unit of Russian state oil company Rosneft was involved in drilling more than 3,000 wells in 2020, according to the firm, which said this made the division the world leader among facilities of this kind.

With a team of about 80, the Moscow-based Geological Drilling Support Centre, which makes necessary adjustments in following the drilling process, has capacity to oversee all horizontal wells and horizontal deviated wellbores that are being dug by Rosneft.

This amounts to more than 250 wells a day, according to a Rosneft statement.

Since it was set up in 2008, becoming the first facility of this kind in Russia’s oil and gas industry, the Centre has been involved in drilling more than 14,000 horizontal wells and deviated wellbores in various geological conditions in more than 150 oil fields, Rosneft said.

The company has set up a school to train personnel for the Centre.
