Russia’s biggest lender Sberbank has taken on the mission of a key vehicle in Russia for a World Economic Forum (WEF) initiative to encourage companies to take better account of risks caused by climate change in their business planning.
Sberbank, which is rebranding itself as Sber, has become general partner of Russian Chapter: The Directors’ Climate Forum, the Russian branch of the WEF’s Climate Governance Initiative (CGI), the bank said in a statement.
The CGI is a global campaign that primarily targets company directors and seeks to make them better aware of risks brought about by climate change and to stimulate strategic planning that takes better care of such hazards and is generally in line with sustainable development agendas.
“In the new Strategy presented to the business community on November 30, 2020, Sber established a goal of becoming the leader of the sustainable development agenda in Russia,” said Tatiana Zavyalova, Sberbank’s senior vice-president for strategies based on environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria.
Sberbank plans to help Russian Chapter to organise regular meetings with global experts, regulatory agency officials and business figures.
The earliest meeting, scheduled for December 17, will be an online event addressing the role of central banks in climate governance across the Commonwealth of Independent States.
