Sberbank CEO Herman Gref on December 11 confirmed rumours that the giant Russian banking group is considering renaming itself by keeping the word “bank” out of the group name though it would still have the word in the name of its purely financial unit.
Sberbank has become “much more than a bank”. It offers a large variety of services, not all of them financial, Gref explained.
“We’ve become quite a large ecosystem [and] are increasingly a technological company,” he told a news conference in Moscow in comments on what, according to him, is only a long-term possibility.
“It’s true that we are discussing this matter. It’s too early to make any announcements,” he said.
But “bank” would be present in the name of the group’s financial unit in any case as the law prescribes this, he added.
